The Municipal Nutrition Committee (MNC) conducted the 2nd Batch Roll-out Training – Promote Good Nutrition on Infant and Young Child Feeding on January 20-24, 2014 at the Lal-lo Multi-Purpose Hall which was attended by Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNS), Barangay Health Workers (BHW) and Mother Leaders from the different barangays of the municipality which include Cabayabasan, Bicud, San Lorenzo, Catayauan, Bagumbayan, Jurisdiction, Bangag, Fusina and Tucala.
Said training is part of the Accelerated Hunger-Mitigation Program: Promote Good Nutrition Component which is a joint undertaking of the National Nutrition Council (NNC), which funded the entire training and the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Lal-lo through its MNC.
Maria Concepcion Abbang, M.D., Municipal Health Officer/Municipal Nutrition Action Officer, Kristine Michelle Tabaco, R.N., Mayline Urcia, R.M., Ronalyn Borja, R.M., Leticia Israel, R.M., and Rowena Articulo, R.M., employees of the Rural Health Unit (RHU) served as resource speakers during the training.
The 5-day training focused on the importance of the proper feeding of infants and young children. According to the World Health Organization, “undernutrition is associated with 45% of child deaths, and globally in 2012, 162 million children under five were estimated to be stunted and almost 100 million had low weight-for-height, mostly as a consequence of poor feeding and repeated infections; 44 million were overweight or obese.” These statistics were found to be alarming so the LGU continues to develop and spearhead programs/projects to educate our health workers so they can easily provide assistance to mothers and their children, this training being one of those.
The training aims to equip the barangay implementers with the proper and sufficient knowledge on ways to promote good nutrition in their respective barangays, as well as to prevent malnutrition among infants through exclusive breastfeeding, and ultimately, to improve the status of health and nutrition of the people of Lal-lo.
